Microsoft announces Copilot Cowork — AI that handles multi-step work tasks across M365, not just answers prompts

Microsoft announced Copilot Cowork on March 12, a new capability that moves Copilot beyond single-prompt responses toward handling multi-step work tasks on behalf of users. With Cowork, employees describe a goal and delegate the steps required to complete it. Copilot then coordinates actions across Microsoft 365 tools — drafting, scheduling, researching, compiling — while keeping users in control of approvals. Cowork launched in limited Research Preview, with broader rollout expected through Microsoft's Frontier early-access program in late March.

Copilot until now has been a sophisticated autocomplete: you ask, it responds, you act. Cowork flips that. The user sets the goal; Copilot manages the execution. That's the architecture shift that makes AI actually reduce workload rather than just changing how workload is done.
